X-RAY DIFFRACTION STUDIES OF THE STRUCTURE OF SOME LIQUID ALLOYS OF INDIUM WITH LEAD AND TIN (in Russian)

Three alloys of the In--Pb and two of the In--Sn systems were investigated, in an attempt to clarify the connection between the structure of the solid and liquid alloys and the laws governing changes in the close order as a function of the temperature. The Pb alloys included a Pb-base solid solution with a face-centered cubic structure, containing about 55 at.% In; an In-base solid solution with a facecentered tetragonal lattice containing 87.7 at.% In and having a a/a ratio > 1 and a face-centered tetragonal, 77.0 at.% In with a face- centered tetragonal lattice but with a c/a ratio <1. In the In--Sn system alloys with composition of In/sub 3/--Sn and In-Sn/sub 4/ were investigated. The first corresponded to a BETA solid soluti on with a face-centered tetragonal lattice and a c/a ratio <1 while the second has a 2-phase eutectic structure in the temperature range from 60 to 117 deg C containing a BETA solid solution and a Sn-base solid solution. It was found that melting of the alloys with a closely packed lattice does not result in the degradation of the type of packing. The atoms are statistically distributed in the liquid alloy, with the number of atoms in the first coordination sphere proportional with their concentration. In the In--Pb system an increase by 60 to 70 deg C above the liquidus temperature tended to transform the close-order structure to a denser, face-centered cubic lattice. No quasieutectic structure appeared in the In--Sn/sub 4/ system. (TTT)
