During the determination of the isotopic composition of spent fuel elements of the First Soviet Atomic Power Station, Tc/sup 99/ was separated in weighable amounts. The accumulation of Tc in the fuel elements was due to direct fissioning of U/sup 235/ and indirectly from the Pu/sup 239/ and Pu isotopes formed during the operation of the reactor. The amount of Tc formed from Mo does not exceed 1% and may be neglected. A formula was derived for calculating the amount of Tc accumulated in the reactor from either the integral flux or the burnup, assuming that the yield from Pu (5.9%) was the same as from U/sup 235/ (6.06%). The Tc/sup 99/ was identified by chemical, spectral, and mass- spectrographic methods. The Curie graph indicated that the isotope emits 0.29- Mev BETA -particles. The thin metallic Tc coatings needed for the measurements were prepared by reducing the NH/sub 4/ pertechnate in a H/sub 2/ stream at 500 to 600 deg C. (TTT)
