PRODUCTION OF METALLIC ZIRCONIUM BY IGNEOUS ELECTROLYSIS BEGINNING WITH ZIRCONIUM OXIDE (in French)

The possibility of producing metallic Zr by electrolysis of fused salt mixtures under conditions such that the metal is produced directly from ZrO/sub 2/ was studied. The use of sodium chloride and of sodium fluoride as melts produced no positive results. Electrolysis of fused mixtures of ZrF/sub 4/ and NaF to which ZrO/sub 2/ is added was investigated. The conditions of the electrolysis giving the best yield were determined. The metallic powder obtained was charged with oxygen. (J.S.R.)
