Uranium(IV) nitrate was prepared by photochemical reduction of uranyl nitrate in the presence of ethanol and by reacting uraniun(IV) sulfate and barium nitrate or uranium(IV) chloride with silver nitrate. Hexavalent uranium was separated from the tetravalent uranium by, solvent extraction with 5 to 10% tributyl phosphate (TBP) solution in kerosene and later uranium(IV) nitrate was separated from other impurities by 20% TBP extraction. The molar absorption spectrum of uranium(IV) nitrate agreed with that of uranium(IV) perchlorate. The kinetics of the decomposition (oxidation) of tetravalent uranium nitrate under different conditions was studied and the probable mechanisms are discussed. Uranium(IV) nitrate was found to form a complex of the type U(NO/sub 3/)/sub 4/ 2TBP with TBP. (auth)
