PRODUCTION OF CHLORINE-36 AND CARRIER-FREE SULPHUR-35 FROM PILE IRRADIATED POTASSIUM CHLORIDE

A simple and rapid method for the routine production of Cl/sup 36/ and carrier-free S/sup 35/ from pile-irradiated potassium chloride is reported. A dilute hydrochloric acid solution of irradiated potassium chloride is passed through a column of chromatographic grade alumina, when S/sup 35/ is quantitatively retained on the column and potassium chloride passes down. Sulfur- 35 is eluted out of the column Nith dilute ammonia solution, and traces of aluminum and any heavy metal impurities present in the eluate are separated out by precipitation as hydroxides. Chlorine-36 is recovered from the effluent potassium chloride solution by distillation with dilute sulfuric acid. (auth)
