SPECTROPHOTOMETRIC DETERMINATION OF MICROGRAM AMOUNTS OF CERIUM WITH 2- METHYL-8-QUINOLINOL

A spectrophotometric method for the determination of micro amounts of cerium with 2-methyl-8-quinolinol is described. Cerium forms a complex with 2- methyl-8qquinolinol at a pH of about 10 when malic acid is used as an auxiliary chelating agent. The colored cerium (IV) complex, Ce-(C/sub 10/H/sub 8/NO)/sub 4/ , is completely soluble and remarkably stable in carbon tetrachloride, The carbon tetrachloride extract containing the complex has a miximum absorbance at 485 m mu , and Beer's law is followed with good precision up to 0.5 mu g of Ce per ml. Iron(II, III), thorium(IV), the rare earths(III), fluoride, and phosphate ions interfere. (auth)
