SPECTROPHOTOMETRIC DETERMINATION OF CERIUM WITH THENOYLTRIFLUOROACETONE

Journal Article · · Analytical Chemistry (U.S.) Formerly Ind. Eng. Chem., Anal. Ed.
OSTI ID:4645257

A spectrophotometric method for the determination of microgram amounts of cerium with thenoyltrifluoroacetone (TTA) is described. After oxidation with sodium bromate, cerium(IV) is extracted with 0.5M TTA in xylene from a 1N sulfuric acid solution. The absorbance of the organic phase is measured at 440 m mu or 450 m mu . Beer's law is followed with good precision up to 10 mu g of cerium per ml of organic phase. The absorbance of the extract does not change for 3 hours. Small amounts of aluminum, copper, rare earths, scandium, thorium, uranium, and zirconium do not interfere. Iron(III) gives a color. (auth)
