Some fundamental experiments were carried out for making precise measurements of the liquid level contained in a high pressure pipe by means of gamma rays from radioactive substances and a G-M counter. gamma rays from the radioactive source are sharply collimated by a wolfram slit and projected on the counter tube across the pipe. In order to increase the difference in the numbers of counts depending on whether the gamma rays pass under the liquid surface or above, it is desirable to make the counting efficiency of the tube as large as possible. A wolfram block was inserted in the counter tube to improve the counting efficiency, and the liquid level in a steel pipe (thickness 35 mm, inside diameter 40 mm) was successfully measured with the experimental error less than 1 mm. Characteristics and counting efficiency at the different parts of the counter tube containing a wolfram block were also studied and the divergency of gamma rays (0.662 Mev) from a slit of 0.08 mm width was measured.
