CHEMICAL RADIOPROTECTIVE AGENTS. PART I

Journal Article · · Orv. Hetilap
OSTI ID:4749849
A review is presented on chemical compounds that are able to prevent or reduce the development of radiation reaction as well as increase the resistance of the organism to radiation when present in the body prior to irradiation. The most effective radioprotective compounds may be divided into the following groups: cyanides and nitriles (example: KCN, malonic acid dinitrile), sulfhydryl compounds (cystamine). amines (adrenaline, histamine), hormones (estrogens), anoxia producers (barbiturates, CO), chelate builders (diethyldithiocarbamate), and metabolites and neutral substances (fructose, fluoroacetate). Methods for the evaluation of radioprotective agents are also discussed. (OTS)
