Title: THE DECAY OF Sr$sup 85$ AND Sr$sup 8$$sup 9$

A gamma ray of 0,878 Mev was found in the decay of Sr/sup 85/ in addition to the weil-known 0,514-Mev gamma ray. The half lives of both gamma rays were measured. The half life of the 0,878Mev gamma ray was found to be 64.9 plus or minus 1.99 days, and the half life of the 0,514-Mev gamma ray was found to be 63.9 plus or minus 0.27 days. There is good evidence of a gamma ray of 0.356 plus or minus 0.015 Mev in coincidence with the 0.514-Mev gamma ray. The 0.878Mev gamma ray was also found to be in coincidence with the characteristic x ray of Rb due to orbital electron capture. The relative intensities of the 0.878-, 0,356- and 0,514Mev gamma rays are about 1.7 x 10/ sup -4/, 0.2 x 10/sup -4/ and 1.0 respectively. A decay scheme is proposed on the basis of these results. The decay of Sr/sup 89/ was reinvestigated in an effort to find a 10-day isomeric state previously reported. No appreciable production of such an isomer by means of neutron capture was observed. In addition a 0.913-Mev gamma ray activity with a measured half life of 50.1 plus or minus 3.4 days, r/sup 89/ was confirmed by half life experiments. The half life of Sr/sup 89/ was determined to be 53.6 plus or minus 0.4 days. Sr/sup 89/ decays to Y/sup 89m/ to the extent of about 0.01%.
