In view of the good results obtained with DAMP (diisoamyl ester methylphosphinic acid) in the extraction of Pu, the complex formation of trivalent Am and its extraction from nitric, perchloric, hydrochloric, sulfuric, and acetic acid solutions with this agent were investigated. The tests were carried out at 20 plus or minus 2 deg C, mixing the organic and aqueous solutions for 5 minutes, then centrifuging and analyzing the mixture. The Am/sup 241/ preparation used contained less than 2% of other alpha emitters; its concentration was determined radiometrically, while the concentration of the acids was obtained by titration. The results indicated that DAMP has the same properties as tributyl phosphate. The distribution coefficient of Am was found to be quite high during the extraction from nitric and perchloric acid solutions in which it forms a trisolvate; on the other hand the element does not lend itself well for extraction from solutions containing any of the 3 other acids. The constant of complex formation of the compound Am(NO/sub 3/)/sub 3/ - 3 DAMP was found to be k = 8.3. (TTT)
