Studies of the effects of fluorine ions on Zr and Hf extraction from nitrate solutions by tributyl phosphate and diisoamyl ester of methylphosphinic acid showed that certain amounts of fluorine increase the amount of metal passing into an organic phase. The best extraction was achieved with ZrF/sup 3+/ extracted with Zr: F: NO/sub 3/ ratio 1: 1: 1. From saturated zirconium oxychloride solutions in hydrochloric acid by TBP and DAMPA the extraction ratio was Zr: Cl = 1: 2. Extraction from mixed nitrate-hydrochloric acid solutions was more efficient than from separate nitrate or hydrochloric acid solutions. The observed Zr and anion ratio 1:2 is the result of partial zirconium hydrolysis due to the low acidity in the organic phase. (R.V.J.)
