STEAM SEPARATION TECHNOLOGY UNDER THE EURATOM PROGRAM. Quarterly Progress Report, October 1, 1962-December 31, 1962

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4749575
To fully understand the hydrodynamic principles governing flow of an air- water mixture in centrifugal type down flow separators, operation of the air- water column was continued. Concentration this quarter was on the discharge nozzle and separator regions. Computer programs were prepared to describe flow in these regions. Tests performed on a full size 10-in,-dia. separator verified the computer results. Considerable test data, describing the separator's overall performance were recorded. The auxiliary air-water test apparatus was converted, to model the downcomer in natural circulation systems. The gammaray attenuation method to measure void fractions in the downcomer region was used. Results show a gradient exists in the vertical void fraction distribution. The air-water test tank and test equipment was fabricated and installed. The first test program, an evaluation of the effectiveness of a necked-down riser as a means of reducing carryunder, is in progress. Fabrication of the pressure vessel for the high pressure steam-water loop is in progress. Most instrumentation for loop operation and test measurements was received. (auth)
