STEAM SEPARATION TECHNOLOGY UNDER THE EURATOM PROGRAM. Quarterly Progress Report, January 1, 1964-March 31, 1964
Testing of centrifugal type downflow separators in the steam-water loop is complete. Preliminary analysis shows that the pressure drop is slightly less in steam-water than in air-water and that the equations which predict separating length requirements are valid in both media. Tests of the necked-down riser concept in the 36-degree segment of a 7-ft diameter vessel are complete. They show that carryunder is minimized when the riser height is equal to the riser diameter. The 8-inch diameter centrifugal upflow type separator tests show a capacity of 2000 gpm with 6 ft of water pressure drop. A 10-inch diameter separator is now being tested. Preliminary results show that it will have a capacity of 3000 gpm. The same analytical approach is being used in the design of this separator as in the centrifugal downflow separator. A hooded crossover type separator is designed and fabricated. Preliminary tests show that it is the best type tested to date. This unit is very effective in reducing carryover and still has very low pressure drop. (auth)
