CIRCUITRY FOR A HGIH ALTITUDE GAMMA SPECTROMETRY SYSTEM

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4749378
A system for obtaining gamma spectra in the upper atmosphere is described. The circuitry involved in a balloon borne instrument package, including a combination CsI-Pilot B phoswich charged-particle discriminator, and solid state circuits for handiing the signals obtained from that detector is described. The instrument observes energies from 0.3 to 3 Mev. The means for transmitting the data back to the surface and the ground equipment used for processing it are also discussed. The final information includes total count accumulated throughout a balloon night, count rate versus altitude, and spectrum analysis of the energies observed. A tape system was also designed for recording the information in chronological order for later analysis. Means of calibrating the equipment and methods of observing circuit behavior during field operations are also described. (auth)
