A method of obtaining gamma spectra in the upper atmosphere is described. An instrument package, containing a phoswich detector, phototube, solid state circuits, and a transmitter, is carried aloft by a meteorological balloon. The ground equipment includes a receiver and tracking system, circuits for processing the detected waveforms, and a multichannel pulse height analyzer and recording equipment. The system observes gamma energies between 0.3 and 3 Mev, rejecting charged particles above 0.25 Mev. The final data are provided in three forms: total count accumulated during a run, count rate vs altitude, and spectrum analysis of the energies observed. The advantages of this approach over that of using an airborne analyzer are discussed. Also described are a means of recording data on magnetic tape for later pulse height analysis, system testing, means of calibrating the equipment, and observations of circuit behavior during field operations.
