The BETA phase of U-Nb alloys with 2.5 and 5 at. % Nb is practically not recoverable by tempering from the gamma region. At cooling rates less than 20 deg C/sec, the laminar structure alpha + gamma /sub 1/ is obtained; between 20 and 80 deg C/sec, needles of the normal alpha phase; between 80 and 600 deg C/sec, needles of a martensite alpha phase analogous to that of U--Mo alloys.
