Previous studies on the dependence of the surface tension, sigma , measured by the sessile drop method, on the composition of the melt pointed to a marked parallelism between sigma and the ion reaction of O(N/sub o/2-) in the case of CaF/sub 2/ 1550 deg C. Addition of 26 wt % of CaO to the Caf/sub 2/ increased the value of sigma from 280 to 315 erg/cm/sup 2/. The measurements were carried out by determining the potential of the cell nical N/sub 2/ atmosphere. Results indicated that the surface potential of melts containing 26% CaO is more electronegative by 28 mv than that of CaF/sub 2/. Study of the electrocapillary motion of metallic drops in the oxide-fluoride melt toward the anode indicated that the surface of the metal had a negative charge. Thus, exchanging F/sup -/ for O/sup 2-/ ions reduces the negative charge of the metal surface. (TTT)
