In order to change the large grain size and the acicular structure of Be by the addition of surface-active materials, the surface tension of the liquid metal was determined by means of the sessile drop methcd. The test was performed at 1500 deg C in a vacuum furnace at 5 x 10/sup -5/ mm Hg. Sublimed 99.98% pure metal was used. At that temperature the surface tension was found to be 1100 plus or minus 35 ergs/cm/sup 2/. The density of the liquid metal was calculated at 1.42 plus or minus 0.04 g/cm/sup 3/. The oxygen content after the test could not be measured with accuracy. If oxygen is a surface-active material, the above value should be reduced although the error should not exceed 100 to 150 ergs/cm/ sup 2/. (TTT)
