Multipole Expansion of Coulomb Energy

The electrostatic self-energy of a given charge distribution is expanded in an infinite series, each term of which corresponds to a single term in the multipole expansion of the potential. Several new forms of the energy expansion are derived. Finally, as an illustrative example, the Coulomb energy of a hemisphere uniformly filled with charge is calculated.
