SCINTILLATION SPECTROMETER MEASUREMENTS OF CAPTURE GAMMA RAYS FROM NATURAL ELEMENTS. Quarterly Report, November 1, 1962 to January 31, 1963

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4748832
S>Thermal neutron capture gamma ray spectra of naturally occurring elements, in both the low and the high energy spectral regions, using NaI(Tl) scintillation crystals as detectors is presented. Such a compilation of spectra will aid in the evaluation of possible practical applications of neutron-capture gamma-ray techniques. An external beam from the ARF research reactor is being used as the source of thermal neutrons for the measurements. Efforts were continued to obtain both low and high energy neutroncapture gamma spectra for inclusion in the Atlas. Specifically, low energy neutron-capture gamma spectra of B, S, Ca, Cr, Zn, Ge, Sr, Mo, Ru, Pd, Sn, Sb, Te, Ba, Ce, Hf, Os, Pt, and Tl were obtained using the 11/2 in. x 1 in. NaI(Tl) scintillation spectrometer and of S, K, Ca, Zn, Sr, Sn, Cs, Ba, and Ce with the 3 in. x 3 in. NaI(Tl) crystal. In addition, high energy capture gamma spectra of S and K were obtained during this quarter using the 3 in. x 3 in. NaI(Tl) detector. (auth)
