SCINTILLATION SPECTROMETER MEASUREMENTS OF THERMAL NEUTRON CAPTURE GAMMA RAYS FROM NATURAL ELEMENTS. Quarterly Report, May 1, 1963-July 31, 1963

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4646254
High energy capture gamma ray spectra were obtained from some twenty elements with the 3 in. x 3 in. NaI(Tl) scintillation detector, and from fifty elements using a 5 in. x 4 in. NaI(Tl) detector. In addition, several low energy capture gamma spectra were obtained with the 1 1/2 in. x 1 in. and the 3 in. x 3 in. NaI(Tl) detectors. Only the low energy prompt gamma ray spectra from natural U, U enriched to 93 percent in U/sup 235/ , U depleted to approximately 350 ppm in U/sup 235/ and Pu containing 97.7 percent Pu/sup 239/ obtained using the 11/2 in. x 1 in. NaI(Tl) scintillation detector together with the high energy capture gamma ray spectra from Al, Si, S, Cl, Ni, Dy, W, Re and Hg obtained with the 5 in. x 4 in. NaI(Tl) detector are discussed in detail. (auth)
