ON THE SPIN OF THE K* RESONANCE

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. Letters
The reaction K/sup +/ + p yields K/sup +/ + pi /sup -/ + p /sup +/ pi /sup +/ wa s studied in the 20-inch Brooknaven bubble chamber at a K/sup +/ momentum of 1.98 Bev/c. The production of the K* resonance in the reaction permitted the identification of the K* as a vector meson. The distribution in the angle alpha between the outgoing K/sup +/ in the K* cm system and the incident K/sup +/ direction was examined, and a strong anisotropy was found that can be fitted with cos/sup 2/ alpha . This evidence was combined with previous attempts to assign spin one to the K*. Therefore, the K-K* relative parity is even. For odd K lambda N parity this leads to spin and parity of 1/sup -/ for the K*. (H.D.R.)
