The expected schedule of work for the development and construction of a British nuclear-powered merchant vessel is described briefly. Two reactor systems were selected for development: the Vulcain advanced pressurized-water reactor and the Integral Boiling Reactor. The history of nuclear power for merchant ships in Britain and other countries is reviewed. Two advances in reactor design which enhance the economic position of nuclear power are discussed: spectral shift or variable moderator control and packaged reactors. (D.L.C.)
