Title: EXPERIMENTAL PERSONNEL RADIATION DOSIMETERS

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4748399

Two experimental pocket-size radiation dosimeters were developed to provide either an indicated measurement of accumulated dose or suitable alarming for preselected dose levels. One audibly alarms after a predetermined dose is accumulated. The second provides digital indication of the received dose on a miniature register. Both are adaptable to radiotelemetry methods of information transfer. The dosimeter which alarms has a dose range of 0 -200 mr; however, with different sensors, this range can be extended up to 0--600 r. The sensor is a pencil ionization chamber modified to include an illuminated quartz fiber, an optical system, and a CdS light detector. By proper chamber charging, the unit can be adjusted to provide a suitable signal from the CdS cell after the predetermined dose is exceeded. The cell signal drives transistorized circuitry for alarming, and a second light sensor is included for temperature compensation. For the 0 --200 mr ionization chamber, the alarm can be adjusted for any point from 10 mr to 200 mr. The accumulated dose can be read out at any time with a standard charger-reader. The second dosimeter uses a pencil ionization chamber sensor, modified with a quartz rod and fiber to permit automatic recharging. A pulse produced for each recharge cycle is used with transistorized circuitry to drive an incorporated miniature electromechanical register. Completed tests show that each register digit is equivalent to an accumulated dose of about 8 mr over a tested dose-rate range from 10 mr/hr to 4 r/hr. A capacitor voltage supply is used for the pencil dosimeter and the supply can be recharged with a standard pencil charger. Either experimental dosimeter will operate approximately 50 hours on one set of batteries. (auth)
