A TRANSISTORIZED POCKET RADIATION DOSIMETER WITH AURAL ALARM

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4640735
Operation, Richland, Wash.). Sept. 15, l961. Contract The prototype of a transistorized pocket radiation dosimeter with audible alarm was developed and tested. Though all tests are not complete, the tests which have been carried out indicate reliable performance. Some minor problems involving the effects of severe thermal transients are being corrected. The device is satisfactory for general operation over the range of the incorporated modified pencil dosimeter. Typically, this range is 0 to 200 mr although, quite obviously, higher rarge units can be fabricated. Continuous operation battery life approaches 60 to 80 hours although judicious battery selection can easily extend this to be in excess of 100 hours. By selective dosimeter chamber charging, the alarm point can be controlled for any point over the operational range of the sensor. The modified sensor employs an illuminated quartz fiber, a machined slit past which the slowly discharging fiber moves to activate the incorporated transistor circuitry, and a secondary sensor used for temperature compensation of the basic sensor. Operation is simple, reliable, and positive and the mechanical ruggedness is limited only by the actual pencil dosimeter used. (auth)
