CONTROLLING THE CAKING OF SINTER WITH THE AID OF RADIOACTIVE ISOTOPES

Results obtained with the use of counter tubes to measure the intensity of gamma rays passed through a raw charge and caked sinter were unsatisfactory. The tubes were employed under production conditions at high surrounding temperatures and strong vibrations and shocks during the operation of sintering machines. Stainless-steel ionization chambers were manufactured and tested. Various gamma-radiation sources were experimentally investigated. It was established that Cs/sup 137/ was the most suitable source. The existing means of maintaining a constant height of the charge layer assures its sufficiently stable level and excludes an effect of changes in the height on the readings of the devices. The block-diagram of an experimenta1 equipment controlling the caking of sinter is described. A continuous control will bring about automatic regulation of the operational speed of the sintering machine, depending on the degree of caking of the sinter; this may yield a high economical effect.
