THE EFFECT OF LITHIUM HYDROXIDE AND RELATED SOLUTIONS ON THE CORROSION RATE OF ZIRCALOY IN 680 F WATER

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4747690

Experiments were conducted on the corrosion and hydrogen absorption characteristics of Zircaloy-2, nickel-free Zircaloy-2, and Zircaloy-4 in 680 deg F lithium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, and lithium salt solutions. No adverse effects of lithium hydroxide on either the corrosion or hydrogen absorption kinetics in solutions up to and including 2 x 10/sup -3/ molar (pH ~ 11.3) was uncovered; with more concentrated lithiated solutions (5 x 10/sup -3/ molar and above) a severe loss of corrosion resistance was clearly indicated. Hydrogen absorption data were found to be consistent with neutral water exposure over the range of concentrations studied. (auth)
