CORROSION AND ELECTROCHEMICAL BEHAVIOR OF Zr, Ti AND Zr-Ti ALLOYS IN PHOSPHORIC AND NITRIC ACIDS (in Russian)

A high Zr corrosion stability was observed in 40% phosphoric acid solutions at 100 deg C, while Ti was found to be stable in up to 88% phosphoric acid at 20 deg C and up to 20% acid at 40 deg C. Zr--Ti alloys are considerately stable in 60% acid at 40 deg C. Both Zr and Ti have a high corrosion reslstance in nitric acid, however, at increased acid concentrations and temperatures zirconium resistance is about 10 folds higher than titanium. Zirconium and titanium are both subject to anodizing in phosphoric and nitric acids. The film on Zr reaches 1.5to 3 mu following 3-hour anodic oxidation at a potential of +1.35 v. (R.V.J.)
