A process and apparatus for carrying out countercurrent electromigration separation of isotopes in molten salts are described for redissolving the metallic deposit of the slowest isotope which tends to form near the cathode. The process comprises adding a substance to the molten bath, interrupting the electrolysis to permit the deposit to react with the added substance and thereby redissolve, and starting the electrolysis again when the potential difference returns to normal. In the case of separation of lithium isotopes in fused lithium bromide, the added substance is bromine. (D.L.C.)
