PROCESS OF ISOTOPE SEPARATION BY COUNTER-CURRENT ELECTROMIGRATION IN FUSED SALTS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4038989

A process and an electrolytic cell are described for separnting lithium isotopes by countercurrent electromigration in fused bromides. In the process, the melting point of LiBr is lowered to 150 deg C by the addition of 30% KBr, in order to reduce the problems attendant to operation at high temperatures, and liquid bromine is circulated in closed circuit. The operation of the cell is shown to result in the LiBr/KBr ratio decreasing from 2.0 to 1.1 in the first 12 days and remaining steady thereafter, and in the /sup 7/Li//sup 6/Li ratio increasing from 11.7 to 22.4 in 30 days.
