IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO THE PRODUCTION OF LOW PERMEABILITY CARBON

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4747166
A method for producing low-permeability carbon comprises heating a monomeric cyclic carbon compound under pressure to effect polymerization, and heating the polymer further to effect carbonization. A suitable monomer is furfuryl alcohol, which may be converted into carbon in a pressure bomb by raising the N/sub 2/ pressure to 2000 psi, and the temperature slowly to 400 deg C over 3 days. After carbonization is completed, the resulting product is next heated to 1000 deg C at the rate of 300 deg C/hr to drive off any volatile matter. The resulting carbon has a permeability on the order of 10/sup -7/ Lusecs. (D.L.C.)
