For possible use in cases involving accidental exposure to ionizing radiation or in wartime atomic disaster, optimal conditions for anesthesia in the irradiated organism were investigated in animals. Mice and rats were irradiated and anesthetised to a level of anesthesia at which the animals had just become unresponsive to stimulation, simulating the light surgical anesthesia now used commoniy in clinical practice. It was believed that this biological endpoint is more valid than any constant dose level. In mice irradiated and then immediately anesthetised with chloroform, diethyl ether, halothane, or Fluoromar (trifluoroethyl vinyl ether), anesthesia increased the incidence of mortality in the irradiated animals over that occurring in the unanesthetised, irradiated controls in all cases. Chloroform had the most adverse effect, followed by diethyl ether and Fluoromar, while halothane was found to have little effect. Further investigations on halothane showed that the anesthetic had no obvious effect on either mortality or weight changes in mice or rats. (TCO)
