Discussion is given on the uses of ionizing radiation in technology and for preserving various agricultural and other products, the present status and development of the fruit and vegetable industry in Yugoslavia, and problems of utilizing large quantities of fruit, grapes, and vegetablea, which spoil and involve great losses. The main sources and types of ionizing radiation that can be applied in technology are described, and the effects of ionizing radiation on different organisms, eapecially those which are responsible for the spoilage of agricultural products, are discussed, Special attention is given to the problems of potato and onion storage, aprouting, and control, and to the storage of similar products, including sugar beets. Favorable effects from ionizing radiation, such as controlling storage pests and meat and egg parasites, increasing the production of penictllin and ergosterol, killing ailkworm pupae, improving flour, and improving wine aging are discussed. Several problems and methods of investigation are also discussed. (OID)
