HIGH-PRESSURE PROPORTIONAL COUNTER FOR LOW ACTIVITY MEASUREMENTS

Journal Article · · Tr. Tbilissk. Gos. Univ.
OSTI ID:4746060
A proportional counter designed for low activity measurements (mainly of C/sup 14/) is described. The counter cathode is made from a 60-cm long Cu tube of 11.5-cm inside diameter. A W filament, 0.035 mm in dia., is the counter aode. To dispose of spurious pulses, the anode is surrounded by a guard ring and drawn through a plexiglass insulator. The counter cross section is presented. The pulse from the counter is fed to a scaler through the preamplifier and the main amplifier. The cathode-ray oscilloscope is used to determine the proportional region. The dependences of counting rate on counter voltage when filling the counter with CO/sub 2/ to pressures of 1.5 and 3 atm under different conditions of irradiation are indicated. The plateau of the voltage-to-counting rate characteristic extends from 200 to 400 v. (Referativnyy Zhurnal Fizika, No. 6, 1982)
