THE 4$pi$-FLOW PROPORTIONAL COUNTER FOR MEASURING LOW ACTIVITY LEVELS

Journal Article · · Tr. Leningr. Tekhnol. Inst. im. Lensoveta

The design and characteristics of a 4 pi -flow proportional counter intended for measuring low activity levels are described. The spherical shape of the counter makes it possible to reduce to a minimum the harmful surface of leadin insulators by applying the loop system of anodes. The background obtained with the counter in an underground room behind a protection of 2-cm lead, 15-cm steel, and 1.6-cm brass amounted to 5 to 7 pulse/min. Investigations were made on the dependence of counter characteristics (value of operating potertial, length and slope of the plateau) on the percentage content of methane in a mixture with Ar, filament thickness, loop diameter, arrangement of the loop, and mechanical and thermal treatment of the filament.
