A method for fabricating fuel plate assemblies of the MTR type is outlined which does not use brazing techniques. The method comprises dovetailing the lateral edges of the plates, inserting the dovetailed edges into recesses in a pair of supporting side members, and compressing the side members to close the recesses onto the dovetailed edges. A jig for carrying out the method is described. (D.L.C.)
