A 300 kVar advanced static var generator (ASVG) utilizing gate turn-off thyristors (GTO) was developed successfully in Tsinghua University, China. In this paper, by using phasor diagram to reveal the relationship among Us(voltage of system), Uc(voltage of DC capacitor), {delta} (phase angle difference between voltage of ASVG and system) and {theta} (pulse width of squarewave of inverters), a detailed description of operational principle is given which may be a good explanation for the dynamic and steady state behavior of ASVG, and in the meantime, an overall introduction including construction design, start-up method and control strategy are given to this 300 kVar ASVG which is composed of 18-pulse multiple inverters. Typical tests show that the experimental results of ASVG with this kind of structure, such as harmonic level, steady state and dynamic performance are as expected.
