NEW ZEALAND OBSERVATIONS OF THE HIGH-ALTITUDE EXPLOSION OF JULY 9 AT JOHNSTON ISLAND

The principal observations in New Zealand of geomagnetic and atmospheric effects of the explosion of July 9 over Johnston Island are summarized. Outstanding features of the explosion were the intensity of the effects, which caused off-scale readings on many instruments, and evidence for the precipitation of particles over an area extending about 25 deg farther south than the magnetic conjugate point.
