PHOTONUCLEAR EFFECT WITH Be$sup 9$

The reactions Be/sup 9/( gamma ,n)Be/sup 8/ and Beg ( gamma ,p)Li/sup 8/ are measured using bremsstrahlung of 32 Mev and nuclear emulsions containing Be/ sup 9/. The cross sections involving different excited states of Be/sup 8/ and the ground and first-excited states of Li/sup 8/ are compared with theory assuming LS-coupling for Be/sup 9/ and direct emission of the excited nucleon. Agreement between theory aad experiment is found. Some evidence is presented that the 16.0-Mev level of Be/sup 8/ is a /sup 13/P(31) level with J = 2/sup +/ and that the 16.7- and 17.6-Mev levels are respectively 2+ and 0+ levels of multiplet 33P(31). The also observed. Their estimated cross sections are about half of that of the otal photonuclear absorption cross section between 16 and 32 Mev. (auth)
