An analytical determination was made of the timedisplacement curves for air-operated vertical safety rods. Various vertical safety rod design parameters such as accumulator volume, accumulator pressure. length of rod travel, rod weight, cylinder diameter, cylinder port location, cylinder port size. relief valve size, and relief valve setting can be varied to get the desired time displacement curves. Results of experimental tests are included which verify the theoretical determinations. A sample solution for a typical vertical safety rod design problem is inciuded. (auth)
