The demand for more lightweight, fuel efficient and enhanced performance automobiles has stimulated research and development in high-strength and high formability aluminum alloys. It is reported that the mechanical properties of Al-Mg-Si alloys obtained through artificial aging are influenced significantly by the natural aging. This problem has been extensively studied previously, and many methods are suggested to minimize the detrimental effect of natural aging. This paper reports on a pre-aging method which can improve the strength of two Al-Mg-Si alloys in a simulated paint baking condition.
