TRANSVERSE RADIATION SHIELDING FOR THE STANFORD TWO-MILE ACCELERATOR
Technical Report
·
OSTI ID:4741898
A third study of the shielding required for the Stanford two- mile linear accelerator deals mainly with the transverse shielding. Radiation policies and hazards are examined, and determinations are made of beam loss in the accelerator. Calculations are made for yields of nuclear particle resulting from electromagnetic cascades and comparison is made with experimental work at the Mark III accelerator. Two calculations are made of the penetration of neutrons through the shield, yielding similar results. Effects of angular spread in the nuclear cascade and effects of different geometry and different beam loss are considered. Calculations of radiation levels fur from the machine are also made. Earth shielding 25-ft thick along the machine and 40-ft thick for the beam switch-yard are determined. (D.C.W.)
