DIFFERENTIAL THERMAL ANALYSIS OF THE OXALATES OF LANTHANUM, CERIUM AND THORIUM

Journal Article · · J. Sci. Ind. Res. (India)
OSTI ID:4741745
Decomposition of hydrates of lanthanum, cerium, and thorium oxalates was studied by differenti al thermal analysis (D.T.A.) using a rate of heating of 23-- 25 deg C/min. The endothermic peaks observed in the D.T.A. curves indicate the different stages in the hydration and decomposition of the oxalates. Phase changes in the oxide could not be detected as the oxidation of carbon is pronounced after 600 deg C. In the case of thorium oxalate, the oxidati on of carbon starts at as low a temperature as 480 deg C, probably due to catalytic oxidation. Activation energies calculated for each of the different reactions show that they are smaller for dehydration reactions as compared to decomposition reactions. (auth)
