The results of experiments which were carried out in a toroidal chamber with a strong longitudinal magnetic field are preserted. The structure of the chamber allowed an additional varying longitudinal magnetic field to be superimposed at any selected time during the discharge. All the experimerts were carried out in a chamber degassed by a cortinuous thermal preconditioning technique. The compression and expansion of the plasma, which were observed alternately in an increasing and a decreasing longitudinal magnetic field, justify the statement that the plasma is appreciably magnetized. An estimate of the minimum magnitude of the transverse conductivity gives sigma approx equal 1 x 10/sup 14/ c.g.s. units while the longitudinal conductivity averaged over the cross section of the discharge amounts to sigma approx equal 1 x 10/sup 15/ c.g.s. units. The processes in the plasma are characterized by the appearance of sharp oscillations at a certain instant of time and by a corresponding decrease in current. The time of appearance of the oscillations is found to be dependent on various parameters. It is shown that the oscillations may be treated as magnetohydrodynamic instabilities of the first mode, provided it is assumed that the radius of the current is not equal to the radius of the diaphragm bounding the aperture of the chamber, but decreases with time at a rate of approximates 10/sup 4/ cm/sec. The experiments with a varying longitudinal magnetic field are consistent with the oscillations being treated in this way. (auth)
