THE BROADENING OF SPECTRAL LINES IN A STRONGLY IONIZED PLASMA

BS>The broadening of iines of Ne II and Kr II in a spark discharge is investigated experimentally; the results obtained agree with results for lines of Ar II and He II. Comparispn with the nonstationary theory of line broadening shows that this theory satisfactorily describes the broadening of lines with high or medium values of the quadratic Stark-effect constant. If the values of these constants are low, i.e., of the order 10/sup -15/ cm/sup 4//sec, this theory does not apply. Comparison with results obtained for lines of Ar II leads to the conclusion that the line shift is correctly described by the theory, but that additionai assumptions are required for the quantitative calculation of the width of such lines. (auth) The acceleration was achieved using two parallel fuses with a discharge between them. The efficiency of the scheme (ratio of directed gas kinetic energy to the electromagnetic energy) was evaluated. (tr-auth)
