TRANSIENT BEHAVIOR OF THE BROADENING OF SPECTRAL LINES AND OF THE ION CONCENTRATION IN SPARK DISCHARGES (in German)

The transient behavior of the ion concentration in the spark discharge of Mg, Zn, Cd, and Hg was determined. The determination of the ion concentration was made on the basis of the spectral line broadening arising as a resuit of the Stark effect. Since the Lorentz-Weisskopf impact theory establishes a relation between the broadening arising from the Stark effect and the ion number/cm/sup 3/ , the determination of the ion concentration in dependence on time was possible. With the help of this theory, the correction of the measured half-value width of the spectral lines was carried out with the measurement of the wave length displacement of the spectral lines. The measurements were made on time resolved spectra so that the separation of the line broadening and of the wave length displacement was possible. The time-resolved spectra were prepared with an electronic-operated spark generator of high precision and with rotating optics. The tlme resolution is of the order of one microsecond. (tr-auth)
