PIPE-LINE EXPLORATION

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4740845
Two radiometric methods are outlined for locating leaks in buried oil pipelines. In one method, a probe instrument comprising a neutron source and a gamma ray detector is moved along the pipe interior, and an accumulation of oil in the soil adjacent a pipe leak is detected by an increase in the detector output. In the second method, a radioactive tracer is injected in the flowing oil, and the resulting radioictive accumulation from a leak is detected by the probe. The position of the leak may be determined using radioactive capsules distributed around the pipeline or casing collars spaced around the pipeline and a magnetic flux detector in the probe. (D.L.C.)
