For detecting and locating leaks in subterranean pipe lines which transport fluids, a radioactive tracer is circulated in the 1ine, the line is flushed and a detection pig is moved along the line. A counting assembly in the pig monitors the radioactivity along the line and the distance from the starting point is printed each time the radioactivity exceeds a predetermined threshold.
