A vapor generator incorporated in a nuclear power plant for ship propulsion has a lower drum containing a bank of heat exchange tubes and upright risers extending between the top and the bottom of an upper drum. These risers open at their upper ends into a vapor and liquid compartment situated within the upper drum and arranged to discharge a mixture of vapor and liquid into separating means adopted to discharge liquid downwardly below a normal liquid level within the upper drum and vapor upwardly to a vapor space within the upper drum, Downcomers are arranged outwardly of the risers in order to conduct liquid from the upper drum to the lower drum.
